Becoming a Relationship Therapist
My experience with Gottman’s couples therapy started 15 years ago when my husband and I were struggling in our marriage and sought help. As we worked with a therapist who used the Gottman method, we were able to find each other again. During our therapy journey, and through many thoughtful interventions, we renewed our friendship, turned toward each other for support, and learned how to process our differences. Using these practical methods to build a strong foundation, my husband and I have weathered 11 military moves all over the world (Japan, Italy, Greece, New England, Midwest, CA), are raising two children, and grow closer every year. It is wonderful to be able to support our clients using the Gottman’s interventions that have helped me so much.
I have always been drawn to existentialism: looking for meaning, potential, growth, and connection. I think we are meaning-making beings and we are able to live our best life when we are clear on our goals, values, and the ability to ask the deep questions of life. Having a strong internal compass and a growth mindset is key to recognizing and taking the opportunities that life offers. However, it's easy to get lost, feel overwhelmed, let the day-to-day cloud the big picture and sometimes think that inspiration and direction will not surface again. The same can happen in relationships. It's all too easy to lose each other and thereby lose the supportive friendship that partnerships can offer. This is why slowing down, taking time to talk with someone about these issues is so important, so that you can choose, be intentional about your direction and relationships.
My Counseling Style and Strengths
My counseling style is creative and energetic. I will collaborate with you in search of patterns and themes, dig deep, and find your own meaning, potential, and purpose. I work to provide a safe place for you to unpack, observe and consider your thoughts, as well as to learn some new skills, try on new behaviors, and set intentions for the future. I’m here to walk by your side so that you are not alone. Let’s work together to make sure you are living your best life.
