Becoming a Relationship Therapist
I have not yet provided therapy for couples exclusively, but have (by default) provided counseling for couples along the way. I have worked extensively with children, adolescents, and teens. Working with this population automatically includes the parents, siblings, and families. I am a big proponent of Family Systems and believe the best results in therapy involve the whole family system. Relationships are an integral part of our lives. I feel that it is so important that we have positive and successful relationships in order to be truly fulfilled.
I am very strengths-based and positive in my approach, no matter what clients or population I am working with. I believe everyone has the capacity to grow and change and achieve their goals. This potential is within them already. Much of the time, it just needs to be brought out and nurtured. Counseling can greatly help clients achieve this! Often, clients have lost hope and/or their belief that things can improve in their lives. Therapists are there to support and help these clients regain their confidence and fulfillment in life. Everyone deserves to be happy and content with life. We only have one. Let’s make it the best we can!
My Counseling Style and Strengths
I am very optimistic, positive, and strengths-based in my approach and style. This is my style with clients, clinically, but also in my regular life. I am authentic, easy, and outgoing and have the ability to establish rapport quickly with most clients and populations. What you see is what you get! I have traveled extensively and lived abroad for three years. I lived in Italy, Chile and Portugal. I immersed myself in these cultures while teaching English to the locals. I feel this was the best education in the world and really provided me insight and awareness about people from other places. It taught me patience, tolerance, and acceptance and increased my understanding of others which I have carried into my personal life and professional practice.
Professional Counseling Background
I have been providing counseling, therapy, and social work services for over 20 years. In this time, I have been fortunate to work in a variety of settings with various ages and populations. I have worked in the field of substance abuse/addiction as a Detox counselor, Admissions Coordinator for a residential facility, and a therapist at an Intensive Outpatient Treatment program. I have worked extensively in the schools (grades k-12) as a School Counselor, School Social Worker, and Behavioral Health Specialist. I worked for a Domestic Violence program. I was a Clinical Social Worker at CAPS, a locked psychiatric unit for kids up to age 18 who were a danger to themselves, others or gravely disabled. I have worked in Healthcare as a Behavioral Health Case Manager. I was a Clinical Supervisor at a large nonprofit here in San Diego for 2.5 years. Currently I am a Military Family Life Counselor, providing counseling services for the military kids who attend 3 high schools here in San Diego.
