What is the Gottman Method and Why is it Effective?

The Gottman Method in Couples Therapy provides real tools that allow you to transform problems and create stronger foundations. This approach is very productive and provides a safe and calm space for healing and growth.

The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Drs. John and Julie Gottman developed nine components of healthy relationships known as The Sound Relationship House Theory. (Gottman Institute)

The Relationship House

I’m Dana, founder of The Relationship Place (PsyD, LMFT) and a Certified Gottman Therapist

I am a warm, non-judgmental, and genuine therapist. My goal is for you to feel like you’re talking with a trusted confidant.

I want you to feel comfortable, supported, and safe so we can work to make your relationship better. Regardless of what you tell me, it won’t surprise or scare me or cause me to judge you.

My style of therapy is very much like my personality: down to earth, humble, funny sometimes with slight sarcasm, direct, and blunt in a loving way.

I do not place blame on either partner in the relationship. I don’t choose sides, but I will challenge you both to change your behaviors, so you can have the best relationship possible.

I am incredibly enthusiastic and tend to be an overachiever, especially with clients who are motivated and open to change and grow.

I have a sense of humor about myself, and I encourage my clients to adopt the same attitude. My goal is for you to feel that I’m completely invested in your success.

let's start your journey

To a Healthier Relationship

Before the therapy begins, you will both be given access to an online Relationship Checkup.

The Gottman Relationship Checkup is an online assessment tool created by Drs. John and Julie Gottman in collaboration with The Gottman Institute in Seattle, Washington. The assessment is composed of 480 questions in five categories: Friendship and Intimacy, The Conflict Scales, The Shared Meaning System, and Individual Areas of Concern. Question topics include friendship, intimacy, conflict, finances, children, trust, commitment, drug and alcohol screenings, and individual issues that can put a relationship at risk.

You will each access it confidentially and will not be able to see each other’s answers. Your clinician will get the results and have specific areas to work on with you based on that assessment. The overall test takes about one and a half hours to complete. However, you can work on it in small increments as it will save as you go.

We often find it helpful to plan activities that feel like a vacation such as reservations for dinner and making arrangements to have childcare so you can focus on yourselves.
